Employee Net Promoter Score (eNPS): A Guide for HR Leaders

What Is the Employee Net Promoter Score (eNPS)?

The Employee Net Promoter Score (eNPS) is a metric that measures employee loyalty and satisfaction by asking a single question: ‘On a scale of 0-10, how likely are you to recommend this organization as a place to work?’ Scores are categorized as Promoters (9-10), Passives (7-8), and Detractors (0-6).

How to Calculate eNPS

Subtract the percentage of Detractors from the percentage of Promoters. The result is your eNPS, which ranges from -100 to +100. A positive eNPS is generally considered good, while a score above +50 is considered excellent. Industry benchmarks can provide useful context.

Why eNPS Is a Valuable HR Metric

eNPS is fast to administer, easy to understand, and provides a quick snapshot of workforce sentiment. It’s best used as a trend metric — tracking it over time and correlating changes with specific initiatives or events provides the most meaningful insights.

The Limitations of eNPS

eNPS is a lagging indicator and provides limited diagnostic value on its own. To get maximum value, pair eNPS with follow-up questions that help you understand the ‘why’ behind the score. Use it alongside other engagement metrics for a fuller picture of your employee experience.
