Australia's SMS Sender ID Register

Last Updated: May 29, 2026

Overview

This page is published by Enboarder Inc. and its Affiliates (“Enboarder“) to let Australian customers know about the new ACMA SMS Sender ID Register — what it means, what we’re doing about it, and what you need to do before 1 July 2026.

This page also satisfies Enboarder’s obligation under Part 2, Section 10 of the Telecommunications (SMS Sender ID Register) Industry Standard 2025 to make this information publicly available.

⚠️ Action required if you’re an Australian customer. If you use Enboarder to send SMS to Australian recipients using a branded Sender ID (your business name), you need to register it before 1 July 2026 — or your messages may appear as “Unverified” or get blocked.

1. What is the SMS Sender ID Register?

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (“ACMA“) is introducing a national SMS Sender ID Register as part of the Australian Government’s Fighting Scams initiative. It’s designed to stop scammers impersonating trusted brands — and it’s a big deal for anyone sending branded SMS in Australia.

From 1 July 2026, any alphanumeric Sender ID — the business name that appears at the top of an SMS — must be registered and approved by ACMA before it can be used to send messages to Australian mobile numbers.

The Register operates under the Telecommunications (SMS Sender ID Register) Industry Standard 2025, established under the Telecommunications Act 1997 (Cth).

2. Enboarder’s role 🔍

Under the Industry Standard, Enboarder operates as an Electronic Message Service Provider (EMSP) — a participating telco responsible for registering Sender IDs on behalf of customers. In practice, that means we handle the ACMA application for you.

That said, your business is still the brand owner — so you’ll need to authorise and verify the registration using your Australian Business Number (“ABN“) and a contact listed in the Australian Business Register (“ABR“). Think of it as a two-step handshake: we submit, you verify.

Enboarder (EMSP)

What we do

Register your Sender ID with ACMA via the ACMA Assist platform. Submit applications on your behalf. Manage our ongoing compliance obligations under the Industry Standard.

Your Business (Brand Owner)

What you do

Provide your ABN and authorised contact details. Verify the Sender ID via ACMA after we’ve submitted. Set up myID and ACMA Assist accounts so your authorised contact can complete verification.

3. Compliance obligations — ACMA reporting record

The following documents Enboarder’s obligations under the Telecommunications (SMS Sender ID Register) Industry Standard 2025 for ACMA reporting purposes.

3.1 Requirement to provide information to entities (Part 2, Section 9)

We’ve notified 100% of our Australian customer base about the SMS Sender ID Register by direct email. Initial notifications went out from June 2025, with follow-up reminders ahead of the 1 July 2026 deadline. Each notification covered: the registration requirement and deadline; what happens if you don’t register; step-by-step instructions; and links to ACMA resources. ✅

3.2 Requirement to publish information (Part 2, Section 10)

This page is Enboarder’s publicly available information on the SMS Sender ID Register. First published June 2025, accessible at enboarder.com/legal/au-sms-sender-id-register. Last reviewed May 2026. ✅

3.3 Requirements relating to the registration of Sender IDs (Part 2, Sections 11 & 12)

We’re actively processing registration applications on behalf of all eligible ABN-holding customers — one Sender ID per eligible customer entity. Updated figures will be reported to ACMA as required. We don’t currently process registrations for non-ABN entities.

3.4 Requirements relating to registration for international partners or EMSP partners (Part 2, Section 13)

We’re reviewing our international partner arrangements in line with Section 13 requirements. Details will be provided to ACMA as part of our participation application. We’re targeting submission of all applicable applications before 1 July 2026.

5. What you need to do 🚀

If you’re an Australian customer sending SMS with a branded Sender ID, here’s your checklist before 1 July 2026:

1

Identify your authorised contact

This person must be listed against your ABN in the Australian Business Register (ABR) as either the Principal Authority or an Authorised Administrator — typically your CEO, CFO, founder, or a director. Check with your legal or accounts team if you’re not sure.

2

Set up myID & ACMA Assist

Your authorised contact needs a myID account (the Australian Government’s digital identity service) and an ACMA Assist account. We’d also recommend adding additional users to ACMA Assist for future access.

3

Share your details with us

Send Enboarder your company name, ABN, and the full name, email address, and phone number of your authorised contact. We’ll take it from there and submit the application to ACMA on your behalf.

4

Verify with ACMA

Your authorised contact will receive a verification email from ACMA. Once approved, ACMA will confirm your Sender ID is registered — and you’re good to go. ✅

⏰ Don’t leave it too late. ACMA has flagged that the registration process can take time if verification issues come up. Start well before 1 July 2026. Not sure where to begin? Reach out to your Customer Success Manager — we’re here to help.

6. What happens if you don’t register ⚠️

From 1 July 2026, sending SMS with an unregistered Sender ID means:

  • Your messages will display as “Unverified” instead of your business name — and recipients may delete them or assume they’re scams.
  • Your messages may be filtered or blocked by networks or devices entirely.
  • Your brand trust and customer engagement could take a real hit.
  • If you rely on SMS for time-sensitive comms — onboarding notifications, one-time passwords, compliance messages — you’re looking at genuine operational disruption.
